This list is a combination of resources
I have myself used and appreciated over the years, as well as
some resources that I know exist. It is my hope that you
find these sources to be as enlightening as I have, and that they
help you to find and maintain your path! There is no implied
order of importance.
Books on Art
Methods, Instruction, and Advice
The
Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity,
by Julia Cameron -- this is a fantastic book! Intended to
help people tackle their creative "writer's block",
it can be used in one's everyday life to help bring in more variety
and enjoyment. I recommend it to everyone, as it's a book that
molds itself to the reader's needs.
The
Artist's Way Morning Pages Journal, by
Julia Cameron -- a supplement to the above for those who
wish to keep their stream-of-consciousness writings in a nicely
organized journal.
Advice
to Young Artists in a Postmodern Era, by
William V. Dunning -- a wonderfully written "how-to"
book which is a practical guide for for the aspiring professional
artist. Personally, I think much of the content is applicable
to any pursuit.
The
New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain,
by Betty Edwards -- a course designed to enhace your artistic
creativity and confidence, Betty Edwards can teach even the most
inexperienced student to draw. Take it from me, within a few
days you'll see great improvements. Fun book!
Milton
Avery: The Late Paintings, by Robert Carlton Hobbs
-- a wonderfully-inspiring book. Milton Avery, in my honest opinion,
is certainly one of America's greatest modernists. It's almost
a religious experience to see such a wonderful collection of
work.
The
Art of Richard Diebenkorn, by Jane Livingston
-- another great American modernist, Diebenkorn's work engages
me in an inexplicable way.
The Big Red Book of
American Lutherie, Vol.1,
ed. Tim Olsen -- a compilation
of over 200 articles from American Lutherie magazine.
Representing the content of the first three years of publications,
there is a storehouse of great knowledge between these covers.
Guitar
Electronics for Musicians, by Donald Brosnac
-- any Donald Brosnac book is worth buying, and this one is no
exception. In addition to the numerous wiring schematics
and general information, there's an fabulous section on "Hot
Rodding".
Customising
Your Electric Guitar, by Adrian Legg -- a
good book on set-ups, pickups, and basic customizing. For
those of you unfamiliar with Adrian Legg, he is also one of the
most talented modern fingerstylists working today. If you're
curious, check out his CD Guitars
& Other Cathedrals.
Complete
Guitar Repair, by Hideo Kamimoto -- Hideo
is another icon in the world of lutherie and has put together
a "Bible" for all of us repairmen out there.
D.I.Y
Guitar Repair, by Pieter Fillet -- a "pocket-sized"
book on basic set-up and maintenance. A good primer for the guitar
player who no longer wants to fear the nuts-and-bolts. A serious
repairman may want to look elsewhere.
Guitarmaking:
Tradition and Technology,
by William Cumpiano and Jonathan Natelson -- a methodical approach towards building a steel
string acoustic and classical guitar.
The Big Red Book of
American Lutherie, Vol.1,
ed. Tim Olsen -- a compilation
of over 200 articles from American Lutherie magazine.
Representing the content of the first three years of publications,
there is a storehouse of great knowledge between these covers.
Mastery:
The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment, by George Leonard
-- a book about choosing a path and staying true to it. This
is an all-around great book which is a quick read but can help
to keep your efforts focused, regardless of the intended path.
The
Guitar Maker's Manual, by Jim Williams
-- this is a nice book that walks you through the construction
of an acoustic guitar (nylon or steel-stringed). As a bonus,
it comes complete with blueprints and a fantastic assortment
of plans for jigs.
Making
an Archtop Guitar, by Bob Benedetto -- if
you wish to build an archtop guitar, this is the book for you.
Making
Master Guitars, by Roy Courtnall -- if the
price isn't too daunting, then this book is a good addition to
the library of any person interested in the building of fine
classical guitars.
The
Guitar Maker's Workshop, by Rik Middleton
-- another guide to making classical guitars with a side note
about steel stringed instruments.
Antonio
De Torres: Guitar Maker-His Life and Work, by
Jose Romanillos -- a very expensive book that is always included
in the library of any serious classical guitar builder. Jose
Romanillos is considered one of the world's greatest classical
guitarmakers.
A
Collection of Fine Spanish Guitars from Torres to the Present,
by Sheldon Urlik -- one of the top ten classical guitar maker's
books for sure. This is not an instructional text, however. Instead,
the book gives details concerning some of the most famous classical
guitars around. Some of the luthiers discussed include Torres,
Hauser, Ramirez, Fleta, Esteso, Brune, Smallman, and Humphrey
-- a good assortment! The information included ranges from rosette
designs, top and back bracing patterns, and complete dimensions.
Aside from the details of top thicknesses and bracing sizes,
you can pretty much build an identical instrument from this book.
It's worth the expensive price for the serious classical guitar
builder.
Classic
Guitar Construction; Diagrams, Photographs, and Step-By-Step
Instructions, by Irving Sloane -- Irving Sloane
was an icon in the lutherie community. In the early years, the
only books available on the subject were Irving Sloane books.
Sometimes the methods and materials used or discussed are now
somewhat antiquated, but it's important to know even the antiquated
techniques if you wish to be a successful luthier.
The
Workbench Book, by Scott Landis -- this is
a cool book. Any craftsman needs a good workbench and this helps
you to envision what you might need and want.
The
Art of Inlay: Design and Technique for Fine Woodworking,
by Larry Robinson -- Larry
Robinson is one of the lutherie community's greatest inlay
artists. His inlays are absolutely impeccable. Besides inlaying
his own guitars and guitars of his fellow luthiers, Larry was
recently commissioned to inlay Martin Guitar's 750,000th guitar.
It's truly mind-blowing (though arguably too ornate)....view
it here.
Jazz
for Beginners, by Ron David
-- a great way to begin your
education about the great jazz musicians and the musical literature
they have left, or are leaving, behind.
The
Guitar in Jazz : An Anthology,
edited by James Sallis -- a
wonderful collection of writings and anaylises by such contributors
as Leonard Feather, Howard Morgan, and Jas Obrecht.
The
All-Music Guide to Jazz,
ed. Ron Wynn -- a resource book
containing biographies, discographies, and ratings of every recorded
jazz musician from the beginning.
Method, Theory, and Advice
Mastery:

-- a book about choosing a path and staying true to it. This
is an all-around great book which is a quick read but can help
to keep your efforts focused, regardless of the intended path.
The
Jazz Theory Book, by Mark
Levine -- a great resource for
the evolving jazz musician. Contains discussions concerning jazz
theory and practicing, an awesome song list, and a good list
of recommended listening.
Chord
Chemistry, by Ted Greene
-- need to improve your knowledge of chords and chord
functions? Ted Greene's book can help!
Modern
Chord Progressions, by Ted
Greene -- A continuance of Ted's first attempt at
chordal discourse. Categorized by progression type (e.g. III-VI-II-V-I)
and including a chapter on diatonic chord scales, this book is
one of the best I've seen!
Hearin' the

-- a method for learning to

-- Two hours of ear training exercises for beginning through
advanced students. Starts very simply, gradually increases in
difficulty. Contains transposed parts for C, Bb and Eb.

Blues
in All Keys, by Jamey Aebersold -- Jamey Aebersold
is jazz education's "guru" and has put together a fantastic
series of Play-Alongs with many famous performers on drums, bass,
piano, and sometimes guitar, organ, and/or percussion. I think
there's over a hundred volumes now. In any case, this particular

though the advanced student will have a blast too! All
Aebersold Play-Alongs are scored for C, Bb, Eb, and bass clef
instruments.

But Blues: Jazz And Rock, by Jamey Aebersold
-- there is no real implied order of importance to Jamey's Play-Alongs

a winner. As long as the beginning students steer clear of Coltrane
for awhile, everything will work out fine. ;-) Beginning/Intermediate

Jazz
Play-Along (for Guitar, Wind Insts & Piano) --Jam
with Joe Diorio, Bob Magnusson, and Jim Plank to 9 timeless standards.
The CD contains both trio performances and backup tracks. On
the first 9 tracks, Joe starts with the melody for a chorus or
two, then begins to comp in the background. The second set of
9 tracks lets the instrumentalist--guitarist, wind player, or
pianist--play along with just bass and drums, with the guitar
volume lowered significantly. These tracks can also act as a
rhythm section so you can jam with other musicians. Samples are
available on-line at www.JoeDiorio.com, and sheet music to accompany
the songs on this disc is available through www.SheetMusicPlus.com.
